Platform
My platform can be summed with this: I believe that in this climate of change within our faculty your APSC Senator can play a crucial role in uniting different perspectives and ensuring a strong student voice at decision-making tables across the university.
On Senate
I've often been told that it's useless to have an agenda on Senate: any issues that you bring up to the Senate body itself would not be dealt with before your term is up. What is important on Senate is to have strong voice, good judgment, professional communication, and a consultative approach: I will work with student clubs, societies, and students at large to gather your input on major issues and report back to you on the workings of Senate.
Everywhere Else!
Although the only commitment a Senator need make is to Senate, I will do more to address the root academic issues that cause courses and decisions to be appealed to Senate to begin with! There are big things moving in our faculty at the moment, and I propose to work with both students and faculty on the following initiatives:
- increasing communication and unifying different student groups working on academic advocacy in a politically neutral setting to improve the effectiveness of student voice overall
- working with the faculty to determine the feasibility of applying Senate's "class-free Thursday lunch hour" policy within Applied Science
- raising the numbers of engineering professors who choose to opt-in to publication of their teaching evaluations
- investigating the impacts of gaining credit for co-curricular activities within engineering
- following up on the external review of Engineering Student Services to determine how to interface with other advisors across campus to improve engineering academic advising overall
